Newly elected Saltash Essa Town Councillor Colin Oakes

Liberal Democrat Colin Oakes yesterday won a seat on Saltash Town Council, beating Tory-backed Independent, Colin Matthews.

Colin fought the election on improving children's play facilities, public toilets and regenerating Fore Street. He has also pledged to continue the Liberal Democrats' work to support local shops, kicked off by the popular 10p parking rate for shoppers, introduced by the Lib Dems at Caradon District Council.

Cllr Oakes, a long-term Saltash resident who runs his own local business, said: "Having lived in Saltash for 21 years it is an honour to be elected to represent the people of Essa. I will work hard to speak up loudly for local people and get things done for them."
